A company with a market capitalization of $60.68 billion surged 9.24% at $779.89 on Monday, when it didn't announce any of its own announcements. It hit an intraday high of $785.34 and plunged to $671—a 17% swing in one day, wilder than many small-cap stocks.
It wasn't Lumentum's own news that drove it, but rather the overall risk appetite rebound in the optical communications sector triggered by peer Coherent. In other words, those who bought LITE today are buying sentiment across the entire AI optical interconnect sector, not any new fundamentals added by the company that day.
Even more subtle, just last Tuesday, the same batch of stocks collectively plunged due to market doubts about AI capital expenditures, with LITE dropping about 9% in a single day. Within five trading days, the same stock is first rejected and then affirmed by the market with almost the same magnitude. So, is this a confirmation of fundamentals, or a back-and-forth swing of highly volatile chips?

Looking at today's bullish candlestick, there are actually very few components that can be attributed to Lumentum itself. The trigger lies in peers: news from Coherent has driven the entire optics and photonics sector toward risk appetite, with Applied Optoelectronics, Coherent, and Lumentum almost all rising and falling in a single package.

What they sell is not modules, but the "passport" for AI computing power
Lumentum is headquartered in San Jose, California, and its business is divided into two segments: Cloud & Networking and Industrial Tech. The former is the protagonist of all current stories, supplying photonic chips, components, modules, and subsystems to cloud data center operators and network equipment manufacturers.
The revenue structure for the latest quarter is very clear
Of the $808.4 million in revenue, components contributed $533.3 million, systems contributed $275.1 million, with components accounting for about two-thirds. This means its value centers upstream on the chip side, rather than in the assembly stage of finished modules.
The real spot where it gets stuck is the indium phosphide (InP) laser chip. EML (Electromagnetic Absorption Modulated Laser) and CW-DFB laser diodes are essential light sources in 800G and 1.6T optical transceivers, as well as CPO (Co-packaged Optics) optical engines. Without it, data between GPUs can't leave the cabinet.
Manufacturing these chips involves dozens of precision steps such as epitaxial growth, lithography, etching, cleavage, and coating, and yield control is a skill accumulated over decades. The number of players capable of large-scale delivery worldwide can be counted on one hand: Broadcom, Lumentum, and Sumitomo Electric together hold about 55% of the EML/CW-DFB market share.
Another often overlooked Industrial Tech area is the cycle buffer—short-pulse solid-state lasers, kilowatt-class fiber lasers, and diode lasers, serving semiconductor manufacturing, solar cells, display panels, and electric vehicle battery production lines. When AI cools down, it at least isn't walking on one leg.

So what gives the market such a price? The implicit assumption is: in the next three to five years, revenue growth rates will maintain a compound annual growth rate of over 50%, and operating profit margins will expand all the way to over 25%. This is not a "conventional premium for growth stocks"; it is pricing that "must consistently exceed expectations."
The cash flow side has indeed improved. Operating cash flow for the first nine months of fiscal year was $388.4 million, compared to $62.3 million in the same period last year—a more than fivefold increase; Cash and equivalents on hand rose from $520.7 million to $2.6178 billion, indicating ample liquidity.
But on the same table, there are two hidden reefs that cannot be ignored
Capital expenditure rose from $177.1 million to $284.5 million, with capacity expansion moving on cash; Meanwhile, long-term debt due within one year surged from $10.6 million to $3.2386 billion (including reclassification of convertible preferred shares and 2032 notes), sharply increasing short-term debt repayment pressure.
Overall, daily operations and capacity expansion can now be covered by its own cash flow, and the company no longer needs to rely on financing to survive. But "self-sufficiency" and "valuation safety" are two different things—a reasonable value calculated by scenario weighting is actually about 12% lower than the current stock price. The stock price is still nearly 30% above the 200-day moving average — the long-term trend remains intact; However, it also fell below the 50-day moving average and briefly stood above the 1,000 yuan mark mid-year before entering a correction. Lumentum faces few competitors, but none are easy to deal with.
The most direct is Coherent (NYSE: COHR). Both are signatories for NVIDIA's major order, and their product lines also cover InP lasers, optical transceiver modules, and CPO light engines. Coherent posted revenue of $1.805 billion in the most recent quarter, up 21% year-over-year, with the Data Center & Communications segment jumping 41% to $1.361 billion, accounting for 75% of total revenue. At the module level, it has stronger vertical integration, but in terms of EML bare chip capacity, the two are evenly matched, forming a typical duopoly in NVIDIA's supply chain.
Broadcom (AVGO) ranks among the top three in both EML and CW-DFB markets, but its core profits come from the Tomahawk and Jericho series of switch chips. Its optical chips are mostly self-supplied with limited export shares, making its direct impact on Lumentum controllable. Sumitomo Electric's strength lies in the vertical integration of InP substrate materials, allowing it to integrate CPO light engines in a deeper integration with customers compared to Lumentum.
As for new entrants, emerging InP laser suppliers like SIVE are seen by some research circles as potential "laser throat" participants. If foundry integration goes smoothly, some mid- to long-term EML demand may be diverted, but it will be difficult to reach NVIDIA-level high-end product lines in the short term.
Just how deep is the moat? Annual shipments of optical transceivers are expected to exceed 92 million units, with 800G and 1.6T being the main growth drivers.
