Earnings report exceeded expectations but plunged 27%—TTMI miskilled or a warning?

Thursday, October 22, 2026

Revenue increased by 60%, but the forward P/E ratio was less than 10 times, yet the market cut nearly 30% in one day, with all divisions betting on delivering on 2027

On October 22, TTM Technologies delivered an almost flawless third-quarter report: revenue of $1.204 billion, up 59.9% year-over-year, and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.46, well above Wall Street's expectation of $1.25. But on the same day, the stock price plunged from a previous close of $102.15 to $73.89, a single-day plunge of 27.67%, with trading volume expanding to 6.4 times the three-month daily average, and market value shrinking to $7.78 billion.

The better the performance, the worse the stock price—is this contrast a market miscarry, or did someone catch something from the earnings call that wasn't written in the financial report? The answer lies in the Q4 guidance, a delayed data center project, two debt acquisitions, and a 2027 blueprint aiming for another 50% revenue increase within a year.

It's not just about making circuit boards, but about the entire chain from blueprints to radar

TTMI is often simply classified as a PCB manufacturer, but its real business is far more complex than "printed circuit boards": from advanced PCBs, IC substrates, custom assemblies, to RF and specialty components, and to radar and communication mission systems, the company operates in three divisions: Aerospace & Defense (A&D), Commercial, and RF & Specialty Components, with factories in the US, Taiwan, and international markets.

The customer list also spans two worlds: one side is OEMs, EMS foundries, ODMs, and distributors, and the other is government agencies. The structural changes in the third quarter were particularly striking: the share of data center and network business jumped from 30% a year ago to 41%, a year-on-year increase of 115%, while A&D fell from 45% to 34%, and A&D projects still had a backlog of $2 billion.

The irreplaceability of 7 points comes from combination rather than a unique skill

TTMI's challenge does not lie in a single production line, but in integrating design, simulation, testing, rapid prototyping, mass production, and professional RF assembly testing into the same supplier system, saving customers the detours of interface coordination and repeated certification, which is especially valuable for defense and high-reliability scenarios.

MOSAIC brand multimode radar, AN/APS-153 radar, MH-60R/S communication suite, as well as maritime surveillance, counter-drone countermeasures, advanced air mobility, and other applications, often have long lifecycles. Whether suppliers can meet reliability and platform integration requirements is more important than offering a few cents below the quote.

If you compare an ordinary PCB factory to a contractor who builds according to drawings, TTMI is more like a general contractor that can produce drawings, construct, and even conduct acceptance. But it also does not disclose the core patent list, exclusive contracts, or share data, so the report only gives it 7/10: engineering barriers exist, but monopoly is far from real.

34x or 9x, two faces of valuation for the same stock

Based on $73.89 and earnings per share of $2.21 over the past 12 months, TTMI's rolling price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) is 33.43 times; The report snapshot shows a P/E ratio of 2.34 times, an enterprise value multiple (EV/EBITDA) of 21.48 times, and a free cash flow yield of only 1.27%. Judging by realized earnings and cash, it is by no means cheap.

But once the management gave preliminary guidance for 2027, the picture immediately flipped: $6.5 billion to $6.75 billion in revenue, $810 to $8.90 in non-GAAP earnings per share, corresponding to a forward P/E ratio of only 8.3 to 9.1 times, and a forward P/E ratio of 1.15 to 1.20 times. Another data source once reported a market cap of $10.76 billion, but looking at the circulating shares calculated by stock price inverse, the $7.78 billion figure holds up.

So what face is the market actually using to price it? ** Today's plunge shows that investors are no longer willing to pay premiums for the 2027 commitments, especially since this guidance includes completed acquisitions that are not entirely from endogenous growth.

In the third gear scenario, the margin of safety is actually quite thin

The research report uses three levels of scenarios to test sensitivity

The downside scenario assumes EPS only reaches 80% of the guidance lower boundary with an 8x P/E ratio; The benchmark scenario takes the midpoint guidance of $8.50 and 10 times; The upside scenario takes the upper boundary of $8.90 and offers 12 times. The conclusion is that the current stock price is close to the benchmark scenario, and the research report judges valuation as stretched.

In other words, today's cut has already pushed a considerable portion of the bad news into the price, but it has not yet created a sufficient margin of safety; further increases will require operational data to prove it. For specific price levels and real-time buy/sell signals corresponding to the three scenarios, see the official account.

Cash flow can support itself, but expansion is increasing leverage

Free cash flow in FY2024 was $236.9 million, rising to $291.9 million in FY2025, higher than net profit of $177.4 million that year; FCF in Q1 FY2026 was $21.7 million, reversing the negative $10.7 million in the same period last year. FCF further reached $74.8 million in Q3, based on the report's assessment that the company is capable of self-financing.

The trouble lies in the pace of expansion. The company acquired Epiq Solutions for $1.1 billion in all-cash purchase, announced a $650 million acquisition of Ophir Optics under MKS, and planned another $400 million capacity investment. As of the end of September, pro forma net leverage rose to 2.8 times adjusted EBITDA, and media estimates that new interest is about $20 million per quarter.

During the acceleration period of mature platforms, the market was the first to vote against it

TTMI is not a concept stock: FY2025 revenue $2.91 billion, net profit $177.4 million; FY2026 Q2 revenue surpassed $1 billion for the first time, then rose to $1.204 billion in Q3. Revenue growth accelerated from 19.3% in FY2025 to 37.4% in Q2 and 59.9% in Q3, with operating margin rising from 9.6% in Q3 last year to 13.5%.

The report is characterized as "profit acceleration and valuation repricing in mature platforms," rather than a breakthrough. The stock price gave an even more pessimistic vote: closing about 38% below the 50-day moving average, 42.3% below the 200-day moving average, and a cumulative 30-day drawdown of 41.6%. Fundamentals are accelerating, stock prices are slowing; who will turn back first depends on the numbers for the next two quarters.

Five frames of reference—see which boundary TTMI stands on

Benchmark Electronics and TTMI intersect in complex electronics manufacturing and engineering services; Sanmina competes with global EMS, PCB, and system integration scale and standardized manufacturing. TTMI's difference lies in its simultaneous presence of RF and specialty components as well as MOSAIC task systems, with a combination that leans more toward engineering and high reliability.

Celestica is the best mirror to observe the exposure of data centers and communication supply chains. In this Q3 report, TTMI's data center business more than doubled year-on-year, indicating that AI infrastructure demand is indeed flowing in. However, a data center project delay caused the business to fall short of internal targets by about 10%, exposing the constraints of major client project pace.

Amphenol represents the value chain of highly reliable interconnects and RF connections, allowing the market to test whether it is willing to pay high multiples for high-performance interconnects; Ducommun is closer to A&D structural components and electronic systems, suitable for comparing defense project cycles and backlog visibility.

The moat is "what can be done," not "what others can't do." TTMI's advantage lies in product breadth and an integrated service chain from design to testing; its weakness is heavier capital and working capital requirements than pure EMS, as well as the disadvantage in business purity compared to relatively focused competitors; There is currently a lack of comparable hard data on market share, unit price, yield, and certification cycle.

The ceiling is hard to describe, but the steps are already right in front of you

The company has not disclosed data on Total Service Market (TAM), Serviceable Segment (SAM), or share data, and the report refuses to directly equate the entire AI capital expenditure with the TTMI cake. Broadly defined TAM covers PCBs, substrates, RF components, assembly, and task systems required for A&D, data centers, automotive, medical, industrial, instrumentation, and networks. SAM must exclude the parts lacking certification and capacity; SOM is the real source of revenue.

The anchor point that can be confirmed is the company's own numbers

FY2024 revenue is $2.44 billion, FY2026 full-year guidance raised to $4.47 billion to $4.49 billion, and FY2027 preliminary target $6.5 billion to $6.75 billion. The research report conducted pure scenario simulations: if FY2028 grows by 10%-20% and FY2029 grows by 8%-15%, revenue will fall between $7.72 billion and $9.32 billion, but this is only a sensitivity test, with no orders or capacity to support it.

Bulls: The numbers are already telling, and valuations have returned to single digits

The bulls' confidence comes from financial reports that have already been realized, not from AI stories that have yet to be delivered:

▲ Bull Case
① Q3 revenue was $1.204 billion, up 59.9% year-over-year, with non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.46, more than 20% above consensus expectations
② Adjusted EBITDA hit a record $242.3 million, with margins rising from 16.1% to 20.1%, and operating leverage is being released
③ Data center and network business grew 115% year-on-year, with revenue share rising to 41%, and AI demand is no longer just a narrative
④ The total order-to-ship ratio reached 2.13, with a backlog of $2 billion in A&D projects, providing visibility for future revenue
⑤ Full-year revenue guidance is raised to $4.47 billion to $4.49 billion, and fourth-quarter revenue guidance is $1.42 billion to $1.44 billion
⑥ Based on 2027 guidance, the forward P/E ratio is only 8.3 to 9.1 times, a huge gap after the plunge compared to the rolling 33 times
⑦ FY2025 free cash flow was $291.9 million, with Q3 FCF of $74.8 million—growth is not just book profit

Bears: Despite the good results, the market has heard three types of noise

Bears do not deny growth; what they worry about is the quality, pace, and cost of growth:

▼ Bear Case
① The median Q4 revenue guidance was slightly below the consensus estimate of $1.44 billion, with "beating" momentum marginally stalling
② Data center and network business fell short of internal targets by about 10% in the third quarter, major client projects were postponed, exposing the risk of customer concentration at the pace
③ Lead times for critical materials are 12 weeks, with some as long as 24 weeks, and supply chains may be stuck ramping up capacity
④ The acquisitions of Epiq and Ophir totaled $1.75 billion, with pro forma net leverage of 2.8x and about $20 million in new interest each quarter
⑤ The revenue target for 2027 starting at $6.5 billion is expected to grow by 123%-132% compared to FY2025, including mergers and acquisitions, with endogenous growth yet to be verified
⑥ The rolling enterprise value multiple is 21.48 times and the free cash flow yield is 1.27%. If under-realized, valuation compression may occur simultaneously with forecast revisions

In the next three months, whoever delivers first will have the say

After the crash, TTMI's stock price will be dominated by several factors:

• Q4 2026 earnings report (expected to be released early 2027): Whether revenue can reach $1.42 billion to $1.44 billion and non-GAAP earnings per share of $1.77 to $1.83 will have a strong impact on the direction
• When the delayed data center major client projects will return to delivery tracks, and whether the 41% revenue revenue business can accelerate again, will have a medium-to-high impact on the direction
• Ophir acquisition closing and leverage reduction: The company aims to reduce net leverage back to the 1.5 to 2.0 times range before closing, influencing the direction
• Whether the 2027 guidance is confirmed, raised, or revised down during the annual report season is the biggest valuation switch for the year, with a high impact on the direction
• The $400 million capacity investment and the easing of material delivery schedules will determine whether the revenue tier can be built on time by 2027 and will influence the direction

From a recovery stock to an AI darling, and then to a drop of nearly 30% in a single day

Looking back over two years

FY2024 revenue $2.44 billion, net profit $56.3 million, earnings per share $0.54, a remedial manufacturer with untapped profit margins; FY2025 revenue rose to $2.91 billion, operating profit $264.7 million, net profit $177.4 million, and earnings per share $1.68, with simultaneous improvements in revenue, profit, and cash flow, proving it is not just a story.

Entering 2026, Q1 revenue is $846 million, Q2 $1.004 billion, and Q3 $1.204 billion, with quarterly operating margins rising from 8.56% to 10.87% and then to 13.5%. The stock price briefly exceeded $200 this summer, but then gradually declined amid acquisitions, debt expansion, and cooling AI hardware sentiment.

It has proven its execution in the past but cannot endorse its future. Today's plunge marks a complete shift in market focus from "profit recovery" to "whether the 2027 steps will be realized," and this question can only be answered by orders, backlog, segment profit margins, and cash flow.

⚠️ Risk Notice

• The 2027 revenue and EPS guidance, including M&A contributions, will be revised downward if organic growth falls short of expectations
• Major data center client projects have been postponed, and the quarterly fluctuations caused by customer concentration may repeat
• Two acquisitions pushed net leverage up to 2.8 times, and interest expenses eroded profits
• Key materials have lead times up to 24 weeks, and there is a risk of bottlenecks in ramping up capacity
• The Beta reached as high as 2.14, and when sentiment fades, the stock price fluctuates much higher than the broader market

🟡 Neutral

Fundamentals accelerated with leverage and risk hedging, and some of the negative effects have already been digested during the sharp decline
